Bezymianny volcano is located near Klyuchevskaya Sopka. The nearest settlements are Kozyrevsk and Klyuchi villages of the Ust-Kamchatka region located 40 kilometers away. Subsequent episodic but ongoing lava-dome growth, accompanied by intermittent explosive activity and pyroclastic flows, has largely filled the 1956 crater. Mount Bezymianny is an extremely active stratovolcano on the central part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. It began approximate at 7 pm (Moscow time) on Sunday, January 20.

An eruption of Bezymianny volcano happened in Kamchatka for the first time since 2017.

However, in 1955 the volcano showed signs of activity including seismicity, significant deformation, and moderate eruptions associated with the intrusion of a cryptodome. Prior to this eruption, Bezymianny volcano had been considered extinct.

Bezymianny volcano had been considered extinct until 1955. Volcano was marked with the "red" code of aviation hazard. The modern Bezymianny volcano, much smaller in size than its massive neighbors Kamen and Kliuchevskoi, was formed about 4700 years ago over a late-Pleistocene lava-dome complex and an ancestral volcano that was built between about 11,000-7000 years ago. Prior to its noted 1955-56 eruption, Bezymianny volcano had been considered extinct. Activity started in 1955, culminating in a dramatic eruption on 30 March 1956.

1956 Eruption and Subsequent Activity Prior to 1955, Bezymianny volcano was assumed to be extinct.

Bezymianny (Figs.1,2) is one of the most well-known Kamchatka volcanoes thanks to its catastrophic eruption in 1956, preceded by a failure of a 0.5 km 3 portion of the volcanic edifice. The crater was formed during a dramatic eruption in 1955-56, which was similar to that of Mount St. Helens in 1980.
