In the beginning of Book III, Milton has one of his three invocations he uses throughout Paradise Lost . Identifying a poem by the first line is standard practice in the poetry world. Milton’s imagery, light, and blindness I’ll likely return to this notion repeatedly for the remainder of the semester, simply because it seems like such a poignant facet of Milton’s work. On His Blindness, Sonnet 19, or When I consider how my light is spent to which it is sometimes called, is a sonnet believed to have been written before 1764, after the poet, John Milton, had gone completely blind.The sonnet is in “Petrarchan” style, rhyming ABBA ABBA CDE CDE. ‘On Her Blindness’ by Adam Thorpe is a poem which is very personal in tone and addresses the challenges of being blind how health and wellbeing typically worsen as an individual ages and grows old. Most of the sight imagery is in the second stanza, when Donne talks about the sun's light beams, "reverend and strong." Many readers, including us, refer to it by the first line, "When I consider how my light is spent."

The problem with this title is that it didn't come from Milton. Thorpe was born in 1956 in Paris, but grew up in a range of countries including India and England.

Unlike Shakespeare's poem, but still refusing to acknowledge the sonnet's traditional form, the story of Milton's "On His Blindness" is autobiographical and describes a man who has suffered enormously through the loss of his sight and his talents. Thus we fulfill our joy.
