It soon becomes apparent that the young girl is LuLing, now a mature woman who has lived for many years in San Francisco and who has a grown daughter named Ruth. I gave this four stars, not five, because for me the beginning chapters about the protagonist's difficulties in her American life were too long and repetitive. Tan's fourth novel (and first in six years) wisely returns to the theme of mothers and daughters simultaneously estranged and bonded, a subject she treated so memorably in The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife.
